Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the fastest time in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Norris, who grabbed the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs.

Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for the evening session.

The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, lying 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup.

Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, if briefly, when he spun at the fourth corner early in the session.

Tsunoda slid over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was fortunate to get away with just a minor contact of the wall.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the very end of the session, rotating twice through the fast downhill corner approaching the final corner on to the pit straight.

The veteran wrapped up in 19th, just behind teammate the Monegasque driver.

The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's car in third, 0.619 seconds slower than Piastri's best.

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
