Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
