Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
